Bahama Village Summer Music Program Teaches Keys Children Music By Emily Bracher The Bahama Village Music Program is a local non-profit that provides free music lessons to kids ages 6-18 after school. This program has been around for 19 years, the 20th anniversary coming up next year. Keys Kids Junior and Bahama Village Music Program Present: Mary Poppins Keys Kids Jr. presents Mary Poppins Jr. at Key West High School auditorium in February when over thirty HOB and home-schooled students present the popular play. Bahama Village Music Program is honored to announce the creation of the “Wayne Hammond Scholarship fund” in remembrance of one of Key West’s most enduring and iconic musicians who’s recent passing has left a void in our island community. ​Thankfully, Bahama Village Music Program’s facility at 103 Olivia St was spared from the wrath of Hurricane Irma. Unfortunately, many of our volunteers, partners, and staff were not so lucky. Thanks to the United Way of the Florida Keys and their Hurricane Irma Relief Fund, BVMP was able to offer $500 “mini-grants” to those who have dedicated their time to BVMP and were affected by Hurricane Irma. Thanks to a generous grant from the Klaus Murphy Foundation, for the second summer in a row, BVMP held a comprehensive arts immersion summer program for 30 students! The kids spent the summer singing, dancing with Dance Key West, creating original plays with Annie Miners, writing songs with Dora Gohlson, and learning recording and music production with Sammy Fuller. Creative and fun art projects included making our own percussion instruments and emoji pillows, and painting inspirational rocks to hide around town. Thanks to an Art Reach grant from the Florida Keys Council of the Arts and funding from United Way and angel donors, Bahama Village Music Program is now offering after school steel pan classes at Horace O’Bryant School!
